Hennops Hiking Trail - The Ideal Weekend Break

When choosing a hiking trail many people don’t realize that there are many trails near to them, which don’t require 2 to 3 hours worth of traveling. Take for instance South Africa’s Hennops Hiking trail in Magaliesberg. This trail is both close to Johannesburg and Pretoria, providing an excellent family adventure for all those interested. Also, hikers are given a choice of two trails as well as two overnight camps for those who really want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre! However, if a day adventure is all you need then Hennops Hiking trail is still the one for you.

The Krokodilberg Trail is approximately 11,33Km long, meandering alongside the Hennops River, at the beginning and end of the trail, before heading to the mountains. Along the way, be sure to keep watch for Dolomite formations in interesting shapes and sizes, presenting a good opportunity for a few photo shots. Eventually the trail ascends to the plateau where you can find the Pruimpie’s cave. The trail eventually leads you back to the camp, only a short distance from the river.

The Zebra Trail, the second one to be found on the Hennops hiking trails, is relatively easy and is only half of the Krokodilberg trail measuring 6,15Km long through the game camp. Here again your camera comes in handy with a variety of wildlife to view.

There are two camps to choose from, the first being the Loerie Camp, where 3 rondavels can be found, providing accommodation for up to 20 people. A communal kitchen is provided with electricity, 2-plate stove and a fridge, as well as an ablution block with toilets and showers. The second camping site is Hadeda, which is situated in an old farmhouse and can accommodate 18 people, again having similar facilities to that of Loerie. Another feature to mention is that both camps are near the Hennops River so there are many swimming holes to rest and cool down after your hike. Loerie also has a large swimming pool for everyone, including the kids, so there is plenty of entertainment to keep you occupied.

For a quick weekend getaway South Africa’s Hennops hiking trail really does make for an excellent chance to relax and enjoy Africa’s natural beauty.
