Hout Bay Gallery - Combining Tradition with Contemporary

The Hout Bay Gallery is situated in the coastal town of Hout Bay, which is a 20 minute drive from the Mother City, Cape Town. The Hout Bay Art Gallery was established in 1984, and concentrates on exhibiting works of local South African Artists, such as Glen Tong, Katharine Wood, and many others.

The artwork displayed by the Hout Bay Gallery, include photography, paintings, etchings, sculptures and drawings. Recently, the Hout Bay Gallery has introduced a new collection, which they have named “Art of Living”. This is a collection of contemporary modern art, consisting of new and original antique furniture. The furniture is crafted out of a variety of wood and they also have Nuristan Afghan carpets, from hand spun wool and natural dyes on offer.

Hout Bay Gallery focuses on combining traditional art with more modern, contemporary pieces. Large amounts of art are on sale to the general public, and the gallery also specialized in exporting items abroad. The Hout Bay Galley has a relaxed, friendly, almost village like atmosphere, and warmly welcomes local and international travelers.

The Hout Bay Gallery exhibits art by local artist such as Richard Scott, who had no formal training, just a love and a passion for painting. Richard spent 7 years as a technical advisor, played around with graphic design, and even started an internet company. Only after getting married in 2001 did Richard Scott start taking his painting seriously. In 2002, through the Hout Bay Gallery, he was able to sell 60 of his paintings in only four months. Most of these paintings were shipped off to countries such as Holland, Germany and the United States.

Gert Naude, is yet another talented self taught artist, that has his work exhibited by the Hout Bay Art Gallery. His work is inspired by his gallery, an old lime-washed dairy barn. His working environment causes him to produce, truly, powerful abstract paintings. Gert also makes use of unconventional tools such as screwdrivers, nails and putty knives, combined with a wide spectrum of colors and textures.

All art that is exhibited at the Hout Bay Gallery, is also available for viewing and purchasing on their website.
