Beaches in the Western Cape

There are few places as majestic as Cape Town. With the magnificent Table Mountain always looming over the city, as well as several other mountains which tower over other parts of the city, you simply cannot help but be overcome by the immense beauty of this coastal city. The city itself is home to several excellent beaches where sunbathers, surfers, kite surfers and swimmers gather to enjoy the refreshingly cold waters of the ocean.

But the Western Cape’s coastline does not start and end at Cape Town. Whether you’re interested in walking, whale watching, swimming, sunbathing or enjoying some other beach-orientated activity, there is so much available that you will find yourself spoilt for choice. Some stretches of coastline even fall within the protected boundaries of nature reserves making them the ideal place to discover more of South Africa’s scintillating flora and fauna. So start packing and get ready to enjoy some truly amazing beaches in the Western Cape.

Western Cape / Big Bay
It is from this beach that the perfect picture postcard of Table Mountain is often taken. Big Bay is a surfer's paradise. The large waves make it one of the most popular spots for windsurfing, kite surfing, hobie cats and wave jumping.

Western Cape / Boulders Beach
Boulders Beach is a pay-for-entry beach that adjoins a sanctuary for the African penguin. The high boulders and protected and protected site makes this intimate beach a wonderful spot for children. A boardwalk extends onto the beach to allow visitors an up-close encounter with this endangered bird species

Western Cape / Camps Bay
This well known beach is very popular with locals and tourists. It is situated on the edge of Table Mountain and is bordered by palm trees, which provide many shady picnic and braai spots. Camps Bay is a well known surfing spot, you can often see them in there wetsuits catching the waves. Care should be taken if you're out for a swim due to strapping currents. Although there are lifeguards on duty and the safest swimming areas are publicized by flags.

Western Cape / Clifton
The four fashionable beaches of Clifton are separated by gigantic rocks and are well sheltered from the wind. The first, second and third beaches are small and hidden away from the road by huge cosmopolitan apartment blocks. These beaches are famous with partygoers and become very lively at night. The Fourth beach is the largest and the most frequently visited by tourists, it offers good parking, lifeguards, security and food and drink facilities. Unfortunately the water in this area is too cold for bathing, therefore playing beach games and sun tanning is a fashionable past time.

Western Cape / Dungeons
Dungeons is an open ocean reef situated under the soaring cliffs of the Sentinel Mountain at the jaws of Hout Bay, on the West coast at the Southern tip of Africa. Dungeons holds strong currents, cold water, and a gigantic range of sea life and can only be reached by means of a 15-minute boat ride from Hout Bay harbor.

Western Cape / Fish Hoek
This is, accordingly to SA Lifesaving, one of the safest beaches in the country, and it allows for a range of activities from Hobie Cat sailing to surfing, paddling to endurance swimming, snorkeling to walking. A playpark, restaurant and bistro will keep the family happy and well fed, and you can walk it off along Jager's Walk, a shoreline path stretching from Fish Hoek to Sunny Cove.

Western Cape / Hout Bay
This beach is at the foot of Chapman's Peak and is popular with families. Dogs and horses are welcome as long as owners observe the rules. There's also a lagoon that's very popular with kids. This beach is also popular with kite surfers and sailors, and the sea temperature is acceptable for bathing on a hot summer's day.

Western Cape / Kommetjie
The Kommetjie end of Long Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in the Peninsula. Attracting body-boarders, snorkelers and swimmers as well, it is a must for any visiting surf enthusiast

Western Cape / Lamberts Bay
Lamberts Bay beach is lovely for the family with lifeguards on duty and an acceptable water climate. Connected to the shore by a breakwater is Bird Island, a massive rock populated by thousands of penguins, cormorants and cape gannets.

Western Cape / Plettenberg Bay
Plett has the best beach in the Garden Route, and the beach is definitely the main attraction of this small holiday village. Lookout has a beautiful view of the distant Outeniqua Mountains, and Robberg is the place to be if you're out to see whales.

Western Cape / Seapoint
Seapoint is situated on the southwesterly point of Africa, and with amongst the freshest air world, this beach is wonderful for an long invigorating walk or sun tanning, but not suitable or safe for swimming. It also has a well-known tidal pool. And kiddies love wondering around in the pools on the rocks.
