Cricket World Cup Fever

The Cricket World Cup 2007 is finally upon us, and every South African is getting ready to support the Proteas all the way to the finals. Amongst the favorites to walk away with the trophy, are Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa. But that rating also changes everywhere you go and it is up to the teams to prove the devoted fan wrong. It doesn’t matter which team you support, it is a known fact that all eyes are on the South African Cricket Squad. Being the number one rated team in the world, they have become the favorites to make it to the semi-finals with relative ease and be strong contenders for the finals.

Hiking in South Africa

Cecil Skotnes – A Living Legend

Cecil Skotnes is not only heralded as one of the main pioneers of modern art in South Africa, but is seen as a sort of anti-apartheid hero that gave a few fortunate black artists the chance to express themselves and develop their talents. Born in the small British-based town of East London on the coast of South Africa in 1926, Skotnes overcame his poverty-stricken origins to become one of the country’s great artists of the 20th century.

Christiaan Neethling Barnard

Doctor Chris Barnard received his MD degree, in 1953, from the University of Cape Town for a thesis called, “The treatment of tuberulous Meningitis”. From there he traveled over to the United States where he trained in cardio thoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in Minnesota. There he received his Master of Science in Surgery, for a thesis called, “The aortic valve – problems in the fabrication and testing of a prosthetic valve”, five years after he had left his family and his country. That same year he was awarded Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis called, “The aetiology of congenital intestinal atresia”.
