Managed by the Northern Cape Rock Art Trust, and funded through Kimberley's McGregor Museum, the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre is located on a farm owned by the !Xun and Khwe peoples – descendants of the artists who created these historical treasures. Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the engravings, and their relation to the surroundings in which they are found, authorities declared the Wildebeest Kuil rock art site to be a Provincial Heritage Site in September 2008, with members of the public being encouraged to visit.

The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is located in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa, on the border of the Eastern Cape. This reserve is notorious for experiencing summer flash floods, filling its rivers with raging waters, and was therefore named Umtamvuna, meaning "The Waters That Reap". It covers an area of more than three thousand hectares and includes the entire Umtamvuna River northern bank. It is also a reserve that is diverse, with massive gorges, dense forests, breathtaking areas blanketed in wild flowers, sandstone cliffs and Pondoland coastal highland sour veld. And for these reasons the reserve is very popular with hikers.

Transfrontier conservation areas, also referred to as peace parks, are protected areas that flow from one country into another unrestricted by physical and political boundaries, thereby allowing animals the freedom to follow natural migration patterns. The primary goal of transfrontier conservation areas (TFCA) is, as the name suggests, supporting the conservation of wildlife in the area, as well as promoting tourism, economic growth and goodwill between neighboring countries. The Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area, which straddles the borders of South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland, aims to meet these goals.

Huberta, a hippopotamus, embarked on a 1 600 kilometer journey from the St. Lucia Estuary in 1928. She slowly made her way to the Eastern Cape, which took her three years, becoming quite a celebrity in the country, with thousands of fans cheering her on. She never caused any trouble and was declared a protected animal. This unfortunately did not stop hunters from killing her, and they were arrested and fined after a huge public outcry in 1931. Huberta's remains were sent to a London taxidermist and on her arrival back to South Africa, almost twenty thousand people were waiting for her. Her home is now in the King William's Town Amathole Museum.

For years, members of the Kimberley community had been yearning for a museum to be established, but it was not until 1907 that the dreams of a museum materialized. The widow of the late Alexander McGregor, one of Kimberley’s prior mayors, stepped forward to assist in the funding of the museum. The museum was to be named the Alexander McGregor Memorial Museum, but today locals refer to it as The McGregor. The establishment of the museum was a great milestone in the history of Kimberley and it has expanded over the years to become a popular attraction for visitors and locals.
