All over South Africa the streets, homes, pubs and bars were drowning in a river of green and gold; in jubilation, pride and elation over South Africa’s World Cup victory over the defending champions, England. It was not only a breathtaking moment in the history of South African rugby, but a heartfelt, emotional moment for each and every South African Springboks supporter.

The Cricket World Cup 2007 is finally upon us, and every South African is getting ready to support the Proteas all the way to the finals. Amongst the favorites to walk away with the trophy, are Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa. It doesn’t matter which team you support, it is a known fact that all eyes are on the South African Cricket Squad. South Africa's Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel, addressed the nation on Wednesday 24 October 2006 regarding the country's budget for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Fifteen billion rands has been allocated by the government for stadium construction and the improvement of infrastructure in preparation for the eagerly awaited 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Anyone that has ever been involved in the sport of soccer or football will know that it is a sport driven by passion and glory. The fact is that it is essentially a simple sport which can be played with just one ball, an open space and a handful of people. However, with hard work, dedication and a love for the game can take an individual up the echelons of society both locally and internationally and can result in fame and fortune. Of course, not every soccer player has what it takes to make it to the top but it is the hope of great success and the passion of the sport which drives so many to try. In many ways, South Africa is like that aspiring footballer just waiting for its chance to make it big. While it continues to find its way onto the global map in small ways for numerous achievements and discoveries, it was the 2010 world cup bid which has helped it to claim a place in the lives of millions of soccer fans around the globe.
