Grahamstown
The historic city of Grahamstown originated as an army post on the frontier in 1812. with the arrival of the 1829 Settlers, the old town grew with the new farming community and businessmen and with every conflict with the Xhosa nation more farmers moved into the safety of the town. By the year 1831, Grahamstown had developed into the 2nd largest town in the Cape Colony with only Cape Town exceeding it.
The town grew in importance with trade and farming and today has stature as one of South Africa's most historical and beautiful cities.
Known as the City of Saints it has over 40 churches and cathedrals. It also offers a number of interesting museums and monuments. The city of Grahamstown is an important education center. It hosts a number of excellent schools as well as Rhodes University. /
The annual Standard Bank National Arts Festival held each year in July is one of the country's most important art and cultural events and should not be missed.
