North West
Along the North West corner of the Eastern Cape Province and bordering the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, lie the regions of Lady Grey, Maclear and Elliot with their absolutely sunning views of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains.
Aliwal North
A town on the Orange River worth a visit is Aliwal North. With its two powerful thermal springs, there is a modern complex of mineral baths and play parks spread over 12 hectares. This is one of the most spectacular Spa resorts in South Africa. These springs particularly are known for their curative properties.
Lady Grey
To the west of Aliwal North, one of the most spectacular sited towns is that of Lady Grey. It is completely encompassed by the Witteberg mountain range. This town set in wooded landscape is like a place out of a fairytale after the snow. The town was named after Sir George Grey's wife and is the center of the sheep farming district. There are some beautiful mountain drives through the wooded mountain regions. Nearby are famous bushman paintings at Kalkoenkrans. These have been declared a National Monument. A visit to the Buffelspruit Game Reserve is also a fine place to visit.
Elliot
Southwards along the R58 through spectacularly wild mountain country lies Elliot, a town with breathtaking views of the Drakensberg. There are also very interesting bushman paintings on the farm 'Denorbin'.
Maclear
Turning north on the R56 past the beautiful Prentjiesberg Nature Reserve, the road leads to Maclear: a tranquil picturesque village of varied interests. Winter in Maclear offers wonderful snow skiing excursions. During summer the Maclear Dam is popular for water skiing. This area is notable for some of the finest trout fishing in the country and also offers stimulating hiking trails. Greywing partridge shooting in season is a very popular sport for those interested in wing-shooting.
