Port Alfred

Port Alfred, with the broad Kowie River, Marina, lagoon and beach front, is the heart of the Sunshine Coast and pineapple country. Nearby, the Fish River Casino beckons travelers to the tables. Port Alfred is an idyllic holiday destination and a mecca for lovers of all water sports.

The picturesque Royal Alfred Marina has mooring in the small boat harbor. Surfing, diving among some of South Africa's most colorful reefs, golf, hikes and walks and the Kowie Canoe Trail are some of the activities that will ensure plenty of action on your holiday.

The Kowie River is navigable by small craft for 25km. Port Alfred has strong likes with the 1820 Settlers. The little Settlers Methodist Church (1827) lies 1km from town on the East London Road and many Settler names can be found in the cemetery. Opposite Wharf Street stands the original sneezewood bollard where ships tied up in the heyday of Port Alfred's harbor life. The ford where the Settlers wagons crossed in 1820 is marked on the west bank of the Kowie River.

St Francis Spa is set in tranquil country side near Port Alfred. On the Fish River route there is shopping for carpets, mohair products and Xhosa crafts.
