Transkei
The Transkei has some of the most remote and uninhabited regions of the province. The coastal area between Qolora Mouth on the Kei River and Port St Johns at the mouth of the Umtamvuma River is possibly the most wild, beautiful and unspoiled coastline along our entire seaboard.
Umtata
Inland from the coast lies the City of Umtata with old world charm, modern day amenities and a number of small Game and Nature Reserves around the city. A large number of pottery, weaving and handcraft centers make tourist shopping interesting and exciting.
The most southerly of the coastal resorts is Qolora Mouth with facilites for golf, tennis, boating, surfing and superb fishing.
Mazeppa Bay is a small resort on the edge of the Manubi Forest famous for its yellowwood and sneezewood trees, shark fishing, giant sand dunes and oyster beds. Northward will lead to Hole-in-the-wall: a truly remarkable land mark. Years of erosion have left a large hole in this cliff face and this is an excellent area for fishing.
Coffee Bay
Coffee Bay has a beautiful lagoon with safe bathing. This area is a shell collectors dream and fishing is excellent.
Port St Johns
One of the most northerly resorts is Port St Johns, named after the 'Soa Joao', a Portuguese galleon wrecked there in 1552.
This port was an important trading post but never reached status as a full port. Apart from a variety of excellent fishing, Port St Johns offers golf, tennis, boating and bowls and excellent hiking trails through dense forest.
For hiking enthusiasts there is the Wild Coast hiking trail, 280 kilometers of exciting trail along one of the wildest coastal wildnerness areas in the country. The trail is divided into five sections and lasts from 4-6 days.
