Description:
Paperbark Bush Retreat provides the ultimate antidote to today's hectic lifestyle - a peaceful paradise, presenting carbon neutral eco-chic luxury in one of the most magnificent areas of unspoilt bush in South Africa
This outstanding 327 hectare conservation estate lies at the heart of a secluded hidden valley, with indigenous game, waterfalls, mountain streams and pools. The views are simply splendid across the ever-changing bush and along the peaks of the mountain range, creating a tranquil haven where guests can relax and rejuvenate.
Accommodation consists of comfortable spacious rooms designed with a mix of African and colonial styles, situated in a main lodge and bungalows surrounding a central lawn. Each is uniquely designed and inspired by the magnificence of its surroundings, decorated in organic colours and naturally woven fabric, creating an eco-chic ambience
We pride ourselves on sincere hospitality, sumptuous home-style cuisine and friendly attentive service. You can sit back and relax, taking in the natural beauty of this property. Sip sundowners as the sun sets behind the nearby Leutla Mountain and enjoy the tranquility of the African bush.
Dine under a canopy of stars as you enjoy our Euro-African cuisine in a rustic outside lapa or on alternate evenings, in the delightful dining room. The unique open plan lapa together with blazing log fires creates an ambience that will not be easily forgotten.
For those who are feeling energetic, a gentle stroll along the numerous footpaths which cross this magnificent estate, in the company of one of our members of staff is a perfect way to set up the day. We are blessed by an abundance of birdlife, from eagles in the mountains to kingfishers around the streams. Viewing and photography opportunities abound throughout the estate with a wide variety of species available.
At Paper Bark Bush Retreat we hold the ideals of conservation to heart. We are proud to be ‘Carbon Neutral’, generating our own electricity by solar power, routing river water for irrigation (and crucially return), and have a self-composting sewerage facility.
Paper Bark Bush Retreat is the home of the Ingwe Leopard Project and forms part of the Leutla Conservancy where our staff actively participate in many research and conservation projects. Our guests are afforded the opportunity to join us in these activities if they wish. For example Camera Trapping. Enjoy the thrill and excitement of discovering which animals are moving around the estate while we sleep. Guests are invited to site motion activated digital cameras (or camera traps), throughout the estate during daylight hours under the guidance of our experienced trackers. We then retrieve the cameras the following morning and gather around the laptop excitedly anticipating the results. Who knows you maybe the first to photograph the illusive black leopard.
