Three days of celebration at the Kouga Heritage Festival Kouga is celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region with the second annual Kouga Heritage Festival. The festival will be hosted in the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28.
It celebrates African music, crafts, foods, dance and medicine, with the focus this year being on the Kouga region, says Carleen Arends the director of Arts and Culture for the Kouga Municipality. It will start with a heritage colloquium with talks and demonstrations on the cultural history, diversity, conservation and preservation of the region.
The Centre's doors will open on Friday, September 26 at ten in the morning, and all are invited to the free presentations and performances. Seats are limited to 250 people, so it will be first-come-first seated, she says.
The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture will be transporting learners from the five high schools in the Kouga area to and from the Colloquium.
There will be stick fighting demonstrations on the Saturday and Sunday, as well as a selection of traditional foods to savour. There will be a fashion show and cultural performances in the "Best of the Best Kouga Heritage Concert". The fashion show was inspired by an upliftment project of the Kouga Municipality. Entrepreneurs from this project will be showcasing their work on Saturday and Sunday during the festival.
