Thirty-six South African pumpkin experts will be competing for the Giant Pumpkin Champion title in the 5th Shoprite Checkers Giant Pumpkin Competition on 17 March at Fairbridge Mall in Brackenfell. Weigh-in starts at 09h00. Growing the biggest pumpkin has long been a challenge for pumpkin growers around the world. The USA record, set in 2010, stands at a whopping 821 kgs. The Shoprite Group's fresh fruit and vegetable procurement division, Freshmark, provides an opportunity for SA pumpkin growers to compete in this annual championship.
Drikus Kleinhans from Sasolburg currently holds the Sa record at 379.5 kg at the 2008 championship. Drikus took the championship again in 2010 with a 320kg pumpkin - leaving his 2008 record unbroken. This year's competition will be particularly interesting as growers have been provided with seeds from the North American Atlantic Giant variety (which are not genetically modified). The results of this experiment will be seen on 17 March - don't miss it if you're in the Cape Town area. Activities, entertainment and good food will all be part of the event.
