Widely considered to be South Africa's Gourmet Capital, Franschhoek will be celebrating its French heritage in style on 16 & 17 July with the Franschhoek Bastile Festival - and visitors can expect a warm welcome from locals.
In addition to its French connections, Franschhoek is associated with the Drakenstein Prison from which Nelson Mandela was released. Highlights of the event include the Food & Wine marquee,and farmers' market, as well as fun-filled family events and loads of popular traditions. Don't miss the fencing duels, the Waiter's Race, the boules competition, Franschhoek minstrel parade and barrel-rolling contest. An R100.00 per person entrance fee allows you access to the Food and Wine Marquee, and which includes a tasting glass and a complimentary booklet of tasting coupons.
