Every January the streets of Cape Town come alive with colorful costumes, painted faces and the sounds of traditional folk songs. This is the eagerly awaited and vibrant Cape Minstrel Carnival!
Known by locals as the "Cape Coon Carnival", the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival is a lively event filled with music, dancing, parades, competitions, laughter and good times. It is chiefly members of the Afrikaans coloured community who take an active role in this event. Participants dress up in bright uniforms, paint their faces and break out their banjos. The event had its beginning back in the 19th century. Amercican ships would stop off in Cape Town, and soon the Malay people adopted the music of the American minstrels (and the use of the banjo) into their New Year celebrations. This bright, musical festival on the streets of Cape Town is a great way to welcome the New Year.
