Afrikaans as a language is alive and well, spoken by South Africans and Namibians of many races and creeds. While bilingualism is preferable, Afrikaans is a rich language and there are plenty of benefits to being fluent in it, as with any language. Fluency in one language does not compromise fluency in another; it's ridiculous to suggest only becoming fluent in English.
