No. I do not regret returning.
South Africa as a unique simplicity and naivety about it that is refreshing. People are genuinely friendly. We spend allot of weekends driving about and you can bet on it that there will be allot of positive things happening. For example...
Two weekends ago, we drove +- 1200km. Between De Rust and Uniondale there was this colored guy looking for a lift. He was 50km away from Uniondale. Between these two villages is nothing. Sweet blow all!! ;-)
So we gave him a lift to Uniondale. When we dropped him off he came to the driver side and said " Thankyou for the lift and may God bless and protect you on your journey"
I am not religious, but it struck a cord, a beautiful one at that. And that I truly appreciate.
You can go up to literally anybody and ask them for help and they will help. You can pass an 18 wheeler and blow your hooter and he will reply. That’s what I mean by simplicity and a special kind of naivety.
This land is full of such people, simple in many ways but caring in all ways.
No I do not regret it. For me personally, I love this country. The wide open spaces and the quietness of the veld. 13 years in Europe was enough.
Europeans have nothing on us. They have been places we have yet still to go and I hope that we will never reach those grounds.
This simplicity and naivety. You can not beat.
I speak for myself. I am not a city boy. I hate it. I hated London and Paris and little ole Luxembourg. Too many sophisticated folk with too much money and no joy for living besides malls, expensive cars, the newest nokia and the next hip joint to eat la cuisine. To be surrounded by flaky lads and air headed chicks... ;-)
Again I speak for myself and that is my point of view. I have made my choice and I stand by it.
But Europe has its efficiency and stable societies and crime is not the norm, violent crime outside "contained" areas.
Its just very hard to come to terms with the brutality and senseless ness of the violent crime here. And the government is not doing enough to nurture the positives that are evident in this land. Its sad.
