bunny chow!! It's been ages - last time I had it I sat and ate in on a sidewalk in Pretoria, watching the Tuks Jool floats go by. Good Times!

I appreciate a nice bunny chow ever so often as long as its not to strong. Some else we eat down here in the Cape is what they call a 'katkop.' Easy to prepare, you take half a loaf of bread, the you take out most of the bread on the inside leaving you with the crust. Now there's two fillings you can put inside it. Either you fill it with slap chips (french fries) or you fill it with canned pilchards and slap chips. The pilchards must be the type that's canned in tomato or chilli sauce. You then put the piece of bread you took out back, get yourself a big glass of milk, take your katkop in the hand and enjoy.

Another dish we enjoy down here in the Cape is called a "langsous". Unfortunately no real translation possible. This recipe originated with the subsistance fisherman in the southern Cape and is not really known outside the region. The fish heads they used in this dish came off fish they caught, cleaned and selled. Today we buy the heads.
You buy yourself a couple of snoekkoppe (snoek heads) or kabeljoukoppe (cobs heads), clean them, cut into halves, put into a suacepan with onions, patatoes and spices to taste. Cook untill the patatoes starts to turn mushy. Dish up on a bed of rice. Enjoy with freshly baked bread. Enjoy.

Liza, ek weet nie watse viskoppe jy in Texas gaan kry om die dis te probeer nie.

well, the best bunnies definitely are in durban. this is the first thing i get when i get home.

did you guys ever make fetkoek with curry fillings? oh and what i miss are baken and eggs and just the salted pork shanks that you can get back home. our pies are also very good, actually any pastry dishes like sausage rolls etc.

you guys in the cape are very lucky cos you seem to have fish galore, my bro lives there and whenever he flies down he brings smoked fish with. its strange durban has just as much coastline as you guys in the cape yet private fishing is just not so big. i loved going to the little bays in the cape and buying fish as they came off the boats. has such a nostalgic feeling to it.

i miss our seafood the most cos here in germany what they regard as fish one has to laugh. most times i am afraid of food poisoning as the fish come from afar. but this is the case with most food.
