I am very intrested in the western cape and the wine region, and the garden route. In South Africa I can do a safari, and expereince a city like Cape Town, etc..

Travel South Africa - African Safaris and Game Lodges - Eastern Cape - Hotels - Big 5 Malaria free - Accommodation
The north east of South Africa (Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces) are not malaria-free, and the best place to view game is Kruger National Park. There are game lodges in the Eastern Cape that have imported the Big 5 as they are long since extinct in the natural environment there, but I don't think that it is value for money considering what you would experience in Kruger, Chobe (Botswana) or Zambia. You would not take vaccinations for malaria, but rather pills that you take before, during and after the vacation.

This tour goes through probably the lowest crime areas of the country and into Namibia; you'd have to check if Etosha is a malaria area. Cape Town to Windhoek - Desert and Sea - Safari vacation in Multi Country

If the atrocities committed in Africa as depicted on this list are unbearable for you, what then is your view on the long list above committed by the Caucasian race?

Get your perspective right Lady and stop the hysteria. Africa will always be beautiful whether you visit or not; it’s business as usual..

I just to myself, all the time they say blacks are naďve and “dumb” and then here comes a Lady displaying naiveté in the most grotesque form, all in the international on-line eyes.. sehr schön.

My advice is that if you’re not just another one of those rag-tag backpackers hopping from one youth-hostel to another looking to discover the different “kiks” and pleasures of other cultures then go anyway and discovers SA! Be courageous and go anyway, maybe it’s your divine destiny. Visit the criminals in the jails and interview 100 of them, write a book and maybe make it big-time in life. And if you get mugged or murdered, you’ll make it in the news and you’ll die a Hero.

“No Risk, No fun eh…

But if you don’t have the “balls” for it, welcome to Kenya, Mombasa is VERY safe.

P/S Every time you want to use the term "black" or "white" try replacing it with "people"; I believe only then will we start getting somewhere.

HI FOLKS,

SPACE AGE,CHIP REVOLUTION EXPANDING HUMAN HORIZONS ...,,, BUT UNFORTUNATELY STILL SOME PEOPLE THINK GENETICS AND CRIMES GO TOGETHER.

POVERTY,HUNGER,HUMILIATION,OPPRESSION AND INDIGNITY COMPELS ANY HUMAN TO COMMIT CRIME.....NOT GENETICS.........IN TRUE SPIRIT OF SCIENTIFIC PURSUIT LIES THE HUMAN EMANCIPATION.

SURVIVAL INSTINCT COUPLED WITH RAGE IS THE ROOT CAUSE FOR MAJORITY OF CRIMES.

AT TIMES EXTREME SUFFERING LEADS TO"INSANITY",COMMITTING CRIME BECOMES AN INEVITABLE INTERLUDE BETWEEN INSANITY AND SURVIVAL.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRIMES FOR SURVIVAL AND CRIMES FOR FUN .......SHOULD BE DISTINCTLY UNDERSTOOD.

PSEUDO AUTHORITARIAN INSTINCTS LEADS TO "CRIME FOR FUN".

THE OLD HISTORY OF ONE RACE RULING OTHER IS GONE............EVERY GENE IF CONTROLLED BY A PURE BRAIN OR MIND WOULD BE CLEAN AND SANE.

GENETICS AND CRIMES ARE NOT RELATED BY ANY STRETCH OF IMAGINATION.

"AGAIN HUMILITY IS THE GREATEST VIRTUE"

REGARDS TO ALL,

I'm cancelling my plans for a holiday in South Africa. contrary to what any political correctness, or racial sensitivity notions may be, its just to dangersous, and I really don't think white people are safe there. I'm actually quite disturbed by what I have found out, and I'm afraid that not only would a trip to SA be dangerous, in all actuality, it may put a bad feeling over me in regards to black people, and I don't want to feel that way, but I really can't see how it would not happen in SA. I mean 70% of the violent crime is commited by black africans, and a majority is towards white people. I just really don't understand it. and people want to dismiss the ideas about being civilized? I have traveled throughout Southeast Asia by myself, I have traveld through Mexico by myself, and I have traveled through Canada, and Europe by myself, and have never ever had any problems, or felt endangered. Africa is just to uncivilized and dangerous, its a real shame too, it seems like such a beautiful place.
Hi folks,

When the Ground reality is SUFFERING AND NOTHING BUT SUFFERING with AIDS pandemic ,extreme poverty, oppression for decades (now free oxygen atlast),just relieved from a CHAUVANISTIC IMPERIAL RACIST POLITICAL SYSTEM ,We can't expect a "BED OF ROSES " welcoming few tourists INTO THE GREAT SOUTH AFRICA.

stay safe section for New York City:

Quote:
Despite common belief that it is very dangerous, New York is the safest large city in the United States, and its crime rate has fallen so low that it is comparable to many American small towns (although certain areas are still considered to be quite dangerous). In fact, the crime rate in New York is now below the average crime rate for the nation as a whole, and the city is statistically much safer than other popular tourist destinations like Orlando or Las Vegas.

Gentrification has changed the face of many once undesirable neighborhoods. But keep in mind that much of the Bronx, some parts of Upper Manhattan, and parts of Brooklyn (e.g., East New York) are still relatively unsafe. Avoid them after dark, or take a taxi to your destination.

Ignore any groups playing dice or card games on the street and encouraging others to join in. You will definitely lose your money. This is an old scam that still occasionally takes in new victims.

On subways, looks for designated safe areas, marked with yellow "off-hours waiting area" signs, to wait in after hours. Subways run 24 hours and are generally well patrolled. Never feel compelled to give money to anyone panhandling or asking for money on the subway or elsewhere.

Inevitably, at some point or another, you'll be confronted by someone who is rude, obnoxious, or just plain weird. Do as New Yorkers do, and just ignore them or move away. Do not get drawn into conversations with strangers if you are the least bit uncomfortable. On the other hand, accept the occasional oddity as part of the natural flow of city life and don't let minor annoyances get the better of you.
Note the section on Gentrification, which we all know what that means.

Stay safe section for Johannesburg:

Quote:
Be aware that Johannesburg has very high crime levels day and night and tourists must remain alert at all times around the CBD.

Avoid travelling to areas such as Hillbrow or Berea at any time unless in a large group or with local guides. If travelling to townships make sure you go with an organised tour as crime is generally much higher in township areas, including Soweto. It is also prudent to avoid walking at night in the city centre. If you do travel at night make sure to remain in populated, well lit areas.

Carjacking is a common phenomenon in Johannesburg with one of the highest rates in the world. When you enter your car ensure that your doors are locked and windows are rolled up before starting your journey, night and day. Be particularly careful when going to and from your car as thieves often wait for victims to exit/enter their vehicle. Do not leave any valuables on the seats as it is likely that your window will be smashed and your belongings grabbed. At night, do not stop at red robots if you see people lingering there, as they might be hijackers. Slow down and go through the red robot, if necessary pay the fine.

Public transport use is discouraged as frequent attacks occur on the crowded services.

Rape and sexual assault levels are exceptionally high and care should be taken due to the high HIV levels in Johannesburg. Females should avoid walking alone at all times and should try if possible to remain in large groups.

General advice is to try your best to look like a local and avoid at all costs displaying any form of wealth, including ear rings as these have been ripped from unsuspecting tourists ears.

If you are a victim of crime, DO NOT TRY TO BE A HERO! Hand over what ever they ask for as goods and possessions can be replaced, your life can not.

And NYC is like 4 times the size of Jo'burg

Depending on how you define "black," either 90% or 80% of the population is black, so it makes sense that the majority of the unemployed would be black too.

There have been 13 years since the dawn of democracy, meaning that nearly two classes of school leavers have been through the post-apartheid school system. If you count from when schools became multiracial (1991), that brings the number up to nearly 6, but remember that only those who went to former-white schools benefited from a "proper" education. During apartheid, the quality of education was determined by the hue of your skin. If you were white, you got a top-class education (apart from all the censorship and propaganda in history/geography); if you were brown you got a mediocre education that geared you towards lower white collar and upper blue collar work, whereas if you were dark brown your education was aimed at making you a blue collar worker at best.

Quote:
The policy of Bantu (low level or gutter) education was aimed to direct black or non-white youth to the unskilled labor market, to ensure white control and prosperity. All of the above was carefully orchestrated and implemented in the name of "God" by the powers to be. By controlling the media they convinced the white electorate that the cause was "just" and it would greatly benefit blacks in South Africa. Black political organizations reacted with anger at the new law. Thousands of parents vowed, they would rather have children roaming the streets, than to be subjected to Bantu Education. - Source
The stratigraphy of the education system meant that those non-white people who managed to qualify for university were at a huge disadvantage when they got there. I started university in 1994 and the black Zimbabwean students did very well, but the black South African students by and large took 6 or more years to complete a 4 year course. There was also a program that spread the first year of university over two years to help them catch up. Intellect was not lacking, but the basic skills acquired during your school year were, not to mention the difficulties of the language barrier; English being at a third language level for most.

During the 70s and 80s, as the Black Consciousness Movement became popular in South Africa, there were a lot of riots and entire years during which non-white South Africans did not go to school. "Liberation before Education" was the mantra, and the tragedy is that the generation to put their education on hold to liberate the country has not had a chance to get an education now that we are free. This most certainly holds many back. I have tutored people from this generation as they try to get an education at night school, but you have people with a 5th Grade background in Mathematics trying to master 10th Grade mathematics and that's never going to be successful.

If you look at the current workforce, say the 18-60 year olds, you have the majority educated during apartheid, meaning that the majority of the black workforce is unskilled and uneducated and will struggle the most to find work.
Then you have the 20-35 year olds who are succumbing to AIDS faster than you can say "Condom" and dropping out of the workforce - though these people should be discounted from unemployment figures if they are too sick to work.

Of the 18-24 year olds, who have supposedly had an equal education, the fact is that the township and rural schools are still understaffed, under equipped and staffed by teachers who were typically victims of a Bantu Education and lower quality teaching education. Education is still not a level playing field, even 13 years on. You can bet that those who were able to get a good school education have taken advantage of the numerous bursaries (scholarships) available to non-white university-goers and are only just entering the workforce now.

Apartheid may be gone, but it will take more than one generation to overcome apartheid's legacy. The nearest analogy I can come up with is that of Germany, divided for less than half a century and reunited as a prosperous capitalist half and a poor communist half. It took the German economy over a decade to recover, and that as a socialist country that invested in the East and with nothing like the rich/poor, educated/illiterate divide that faces South Africa. The fact that the South African economy is flourishing effectively means that the capitalist policies under Mbeki have sought to raise money for social programs through increased tax revenue and personal wealth creation instead of a welfare state. You can argue whether that decision was right or wrong. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who is to blame, as long as something gets done about it.
