I'm writting a novel, and I want the setting to be in Johannesburg, in your very lovely country, South Africa.
The problem IS, I don't know much about South Africa. I live in Canada, and basically the only thing I know about SA it the location, Cape town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and that it is home to the Zulu people. What I need to know the most is the type of life rich European have there in South Africa. Is there a lot of racism? The novel is about a murder, so any conflict could be usefull. I also want to know about the black people that still lives in a tradditionnal ways, the basics of their cultures (especially those who lives the nearest possible to Johannesburg) and these people's language (the name of their languages, tough a few words could be usefull) and tradditions. Thank you so much!!!!!!!! It is very appreciate

Well.... you need to understand that the word rich has to be put into context here.
If you talk about the average suburban white and say that they are rich, then I say compared to what? Compared to the average squatter camp inhabitant - yes Compared to the average American or European - no Also not all white people in SA are necessarily well off. There are many white people that live in poverty in SA too, just like there are many super rich black people. It would make an interesting book if you wrote about poor white people and rich black people so that the world would wake up and realise that this exists too. This phenomenon does occurr in Johannesburg as I'm sure in other cities in SA too. If you wish to beef your book up with some SA slang... I'm sure there are many that can help you on that one too. |
