Nearly every single history book on South African history (of which there are literally thousands) usually begin in the early 1600s at the onset of European colonisation.
There should be numerous texts in your university library covering the period between the early 1600s and 1800. If it is pre-colonial societies you are wanting to research, there are a number of texts, but few by comparison, as little is known, relatively speaking. The history departments at most SA universities may be able to refer you a number of online sources.
