I'm writing a paper about South Africa and the apartheid.

I would like to know how it was possible that a minority of white people could hold the control over millions of black people during the apartheid. I'm kinda looking for historical arguments and articles about this, but any personal experiences or knowledge is highly appreciated.

Also if you know subjects that are important to talk about in the paper. I'm doing a lot of searching but I might miss something important.

Thx!

guess it was possible the same way the white minority went and took over North-America. Through force and fancy documents. It all comes down to who has the biggest guns in the end, you know.

for your search, it might be usefull to know that websites ending in .co.za is South-African.
If I run across anything that is relavant to your search I'll post it on here.

Liza

yes liza is right it all boiled down to who held the weapons. the battle of blood river is just one small example of this. thousands of zulu impis were killed by a small amount of soldiers, simply because they had fire power. this may not have been during the apartheid era but it is an example of how weapons are power. one only has to look at the united states today to confirm this.

during apartheid the army was european (majority ) and all media was government controlled. people were put into ghettos (SOWETO) and homelands. the black population had to carry pass books and could not move freely if they were outside their ghettos. These were all ways in which the government controlled the population. If people were caught with propoganda or caught gathering they were put into prison without question and their families never got news of this detainment. people generally did not have any news about the bad situation in south africa.

I had a sister in law who was politically active. she had to move constantly and her telephone and home were controlled daily. she was detained during her pregnancy and was put into a hospital ward completely on her own for an entire month.

Jens!

Try some of these:

http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/...heid.hist.html
http://www.mrdowling.com/610-apartheid.html
http://www.africanaencyclopedia.com/...apartheid.html

Keep in mind that the most decisive confrontations (through South African history) between "white" and "black" left the white minority in a dominant position of force, due to weapons strength. When the matter of "race" became the basis of governmental implementation, "apartheid" naturally put this force-wielding minority at an advantage.

I understand your question very well on "how" a vast majority could have been subjugated - but think of all else that is equally outrageous; How, for example, could the millions of East German population be suppressed by a government of a relative minority of Stalinist communists? ............. as has been already stated: The brute force possession of POWER and FEAR.
