Just for the heck of it...
I want to see who can give me the most interesting Afrikaans saying... (with a translation, my Afrikaans is very poor) Vyfde wiel aan die wa wees... totsiens. feel free to post anything you think is cool in afrikaans. |

LOL @ Vincent & Darkknyt
Afrikaans swear words have an irresistable attraction for newcomers to the language. Some words have acquired a sort of respectibility despite their more dubious origins. Consider the following:
Hardegat - obstinate person Bakgat - cool Dronkgat - negative reference to a drunk person Perhaps I labouring the obvious but "gat" = "hole" = "@rse" Anyway I am out of order since Vincent's challenge refers to phrases (not single words) but I could not resist the temptation!

I know there is not shortage of swears... trust me... when you start investigating into this language you find that it not only has it's own swears but has adopted everyone elses aswell. My personal favorite was one that my "instructor" told me in 5 different languages. I only remember the afrikaans one.
"jou ma se poes" spelling was probably wrong... oh well... I'm probably going to lose my membership now. SORRY!!!But of course I was not as close minded to rule out learning all the vulgarities. You would not believe the amount of sentence structure to be learned from some of those phrases... later for now. That was my two cents. Totsiens. |

Swaar woorde
That is right, isn't it? Oh well. Anyway. I'm only on Unit 7 of 21 :-)
Nobody tells me any of the nasties around here (home), but I recall Dad used to say Jou praat cak/cok (Can't remember exacly what) quite a bit.

Made me laugh...
So far Bret your post has got the best laugh out of me. That was pretty funny. Do you know what that translates into?? if not, let me have the honors of telling you.
Jou = You Praat = Speak Kak = Sh*t Ummmm...... so that about covers what your father thought of the way you spoke.... hope that clears things up for you. ![]() Definately made me laugh. |

Oh I knew what it meant, I just didn't know the exactly spelling or translation of 'Kak'.
My Afrikaans is nie *dit* sleg nie. Having said that, I can just see all you Afrikaans speakers cringing and glaring :-) The worst error I've made yet was leaving the omlaut off the 'e' in Hoërskool, thinking it didn't matter. An Afrikaner friend told me what Hoerskool meant afterwards :-)
