Corrected repost for "Lyrics translation request".
Hi all, I've read some messages on this forum and it looks like there are people here who know/understand quit some different languages. So my hope is on one of you. With my vocal group we sing the song "Halala Afrika" from Joannes Kerkorrel. It's a song partly in Afrikaans and partly in another language, I think the Zulu language. I'm looking for a translation of this song. The Afrikaans part is already translated. Only the Zulu(?) part remains. Could someone help with these Zulu(?) lyrics, because we have absolutely no clue what we are singing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Regards, Jack The Netherlands ================================================= The Zulu(?) part of the lyrics: Halala, ewig is ons Afrika. Tula tula mtanami, tula tula sanaboni, tula tula mtanami, Ubab uzobuya sihlale naye, ubab uzobuya sihlale sonke, Hmmm-Hmmm Halala, sasiphila, kamnandi, halala, mayibuye Afrika Tula tula mtanami, tula tula sanaboni, tula tula mtanami, Ubab uzobuya sihlale naye, ubab uzobuya sihlale sonke, Hmmm-Hmmm Sasidjapolutjoloythina Halala, sasiphila, kamnandi, halala, mayibuye Afrika ================================================= The complete lyrics: Halala Afrika, Johannes Kerkorrel (1961-2002). Halala, sasiphila, kamnandi, halala, mayibuye Afrika Sasidjapolutjoloythina Halala, sasiphila, kamnandi, halala, mayibuye Afrika |

Hi Jack,
since nobody seems to have replied yet, I'll give it a try. Time to test my Zulu, though I believe it's Xhosa. Quote:
If it was really Zulu it would read "thula". "Tula" in Zulu means "to push s.th. through s.th." (which doesn't make sense here). I'm not sure about the "sanaboni". The only similar Zulu term I know is "sanibona" which means "hello". On the other hand "sana" (usana) in this context could mean "new-born child" but then I could not make head or tail of "boni" (umboni = someone who sees). Quote:

Hope this helps a bit. Anyone out there correct me if I got it wrong. Carsten. |

@Carsten: Thanks for your input.
Together with input I received from others I think this is what it all means: Thula thula mtanami, thula thula sanalwami, thula thula mtanami, -> Hush (be quiet) hush my child,hush hush my little baby,hush hush my child Ubab` uzobuya sihlale naye, ubab` uzobuya sihlale sonke, Hmmm-Hmmm -> Father will return, we shall stay with him, -> father will return, we shall all stay, Hmmm-Hmmm Halala, sasiphila, kamnandi, halala, mayibuye iAfrika -> Hurrey we were living happily,hurrey,let Africa(our land) return to us. Sasijabula (njala) thina -> We used to enjoy together Regards, Jack |
