Hello, everyone! I'm a new member, living in the US. My girlfriend lives in Joburg and we are seriously discussing marriage. She sent me a note in Afrikaans when I told her I wanted to learn the language. From what little I've been able to pick up, I'm pretty sure I know what she's saying in general, but I'd like to have a more exact translation. I hope someone will be willing to do so! She wrote:

"Net 'n kort note om te se ek is lief vir jou en ek mis jou baie!! Geniet jou dag op kantoor. Probeer om op jou werk te konsentreer as jy kan! Monie te veel verlang nie. Kom ons toets daai hulpbronne en sit daai 150 IQ brein aan die werk.....wie laaste lag, lag die lekkerste! Jou toekomistige bruid. "

I think what she's saying is "just a short note to say I love you and I miss you very much. Have a good day at the office. Try and concentrate on your job as much as you can! (then I don't know what "monie te veel verlang nie" means). Come on, let's put that 150 IQ brain to work. He who laughs last laughs best. Your future bride."

Again, I hope someone can translate it better, especially the one sentence I'm not sure of.

Also, since I'm here, perhaps someone would be willing to translate something into Afrikaans for me to send to her. I would like to tell her in Afrikaans:

"I will try to concentrate on work today, but it will not be easy. All I really want to think about is being with you, holding hands, looking at the stars, and falling asleep in your arms."

Thanks in advance for your help, and I hope I'm not asking too much! Help out a guy in love!! haha.

Welcome Chris!

You have come to the right place to get your love-struck afrikaans translations!

You did a very good job translating what she wrote you.
Moenie te veel verlang nie means word for word "don't too much long/miss not", and in a comprehensible translation it means "don't miss me too much"

Kom ons toets daai hulpbronne en sit daai 150 IQ ... translates as "let's test those resources and put that 150 IQ ..." (yes, it even translates with an elips

Your bit to her:
Ek sal probeer om vandag op werk te konsentreer, maar dit gaan nie maklik wees nie. Al wat ek regtig aan wil dink is om by jou te wees, jou hand vas te hou, na die sterre te kyk en in jou arms aan die slaap te raak.

Don't hesitate to ask our help in your smallest translation need! Other people have told me before that they've found it usefull to look back through old post since there are a plethora of girlfriend/boyfriend appropriate sentences allready translated

Cheers
Liza

OK, I apologise for that shameless gloating, but hey, it's the first time!

I see from an earlier post you are in Austin, is that right? I'm just down the road a bit in San Antonio. Small world!

No kidding! We're practically neighbours then!
Yeah, I am still in Austin, about to start the coming semester at UT studying linguistics (so at least I have some sort of idea what I'm talking about when it comes to languages )
