Hi everyone, I'm a south african living in Nottingham, england, and this girl from the north-west has just moved to my school, I dunno if we are sort of hitting it off a bit, but she speaks afrikaans as a first language so i'd like to send her something in that. I sense that "ek laaik naai kwaai" might not win her heart, however.

So perhaps if someone could translate....

"I'm really looking forward to seeing you tomorrow and I hope we get a chance to talk. I'm thinking about you even if im too shy to come say hi. I hope you do swimming because its not the same without you"

Thanks a lot if you can reply promptly, but it needs to be sent tonight for 2moro to be relevant!

Baie dankie!

Afrikaans girl to the rescue! (good call on not trying "ek laaik naai kwaai" as your opening line )

Ek sien uit daarna om jou more te sien en hoop dat ons 'n kans sal kry om te gesels. Ek dink aan jou selfs al is ek te skaam om te kom hallo sê. (or, ek dink aan jou selfs sefls as ek te skaam is om te kom hallo sê, which would imply that you are only shy occasionally) Ek hoop jy gaan (kom) swem want dit is nie dieselfde sonder jou nie.

Will that suffice?

Plesiertjie

Liza

Liza,

I was looking up "looking forward to" -- it's something I've never needed or wanted to say in Afrikaans before. But your Afrikaans would've impressed her much better than mine. You have a beautiful way with words.
