Yip, Dave Matthews is from Johannesburg, but he spent a lot of his childhood in New York where his dad worked for IBM. The rest of DMB are American, so it's a bit of a stretch to call DMB a South African band; I don't think they've even ever played in South Africa! (Though I have to say that Don't Drink the Water sounds a whole lot more about apartheid to me than it does about Native Americans.)

I think it is also a bit of a stretch to put DMB in the Rock/Metal/Punk genre. He seems to hover between funk and Jazz.

For south African bands Its best to go see them live. There cds don't do them any justice at all. I don't know what it is about South African Rock, there cds are just so bad really horrible, from my experience anyway. there are one or two song that are alright but nothing that is really good on cd that is. however when I go see them live they are great they don't sound anything like the cds, In fact I would say they are at least as good if not better than most international bands I have seen live. If anyone lives in the Durban area i really recommend you go to splashy fen with some friends, I go every year and every year it gets better and better.

I agree totally. Maybe they don't have the $ to make a good studio record but they're really great musicians.

You want to know about the Metal scene in SA?

As a 22 yr old metalhead, I go out alot and yes the metal scene is growing rapidly. I'd say the number of metalheads in South Africa must've doubled since 2005/6.

If you want to know about great SA metalbands, go check out Mind Assault (death metal), Strident (power), Azrail, Symphonic Schizophrenia, K.o.b.u.s, and maaany more. Mostly Cape Town bands, coz thats where I'm from.

On fb, check out the groups metal4africa, ramfest, winterfest, muzone, rabbithole, etc.

As a proudly South African metalhead, I can say daaaammmn skippy! There's quite a number of us and metal clubs are popping their heads out more and more.

If you happen to be in SA, Cape Town by the end of July, headbang your way to Stellenbosch Klein Libertas. Thats where the metal4africa Winterfest is gonna be.

HAIL!
