My friend has just done two weeks volunteering at one of the camps in Cape Town. The Somalis stood out from the rest of the camp people in that it was Somalis who:
- stole one of the volunteers' handbags - told the coloured volunteer that the "white people" had provided the food for them and she should "hurry up and give it to us." - took the donated clothes back to Masipumelele (Site 5) and sold them, then returned to camp and demanded more clothes or just plain stole them. - when asked to pick up litter in the camp, which is in a nature reserve, refused and told the volunteers "that's your problem not ours." - threw half of the food on the ground complaining that it was "cheap food" and then complained to journalists visiting the camp that they were starving and not being given enough to eat. By contrast, camp people of other nationalities were helpful, grateful, law-abiding, etc. I'm sure there are nice Somalis, but if there were any at the camp they must've claimed to be from somewhere else because my friend did not encounter any. If the Somalis behave in this way in the local communities they were living in, it's not hard to see why the local communities rose up and threw them out. I don't condone kangaroo courts at all, but it's fairly common place in South African townships and a wonder it didn't happen years ago if that is how Somalis behave all the time. |

I heard it from a friend I have known for over 20 years who saw it first-hand working as a volunteer. When she saw how ungratefully her efforts were being received she was tempted to quit, but out of a sense of obligation to the other volunteers she stayed on.
I am sure there are plenty of polite Somalis, but they're not among the ones in the camps who were turned out of their community. At least if they are, they're keeping very quiet about their nationality. |

Soet-water is where my friend was. I see they're still hamming it up for the media and wasting vast sums of money in their vanity. Maybe they need a trip back to Somalia so they can see how lucky they are.

I think what needs to be remembered here is that the xenophobia is a symptom of a much wider problem in SA. You only have to take a look at the current Rand value and inflation rate to realise that the South African economy is, along with the rest of the world, in a downward turn. Remember, this is NOT endemic to SA. I realise people who perhaps arent educated and/or live on the poverty are far more exposed to this situation and therefore look for someone to blame. Naturally this anger is directed at someone who is perceived as "stealing" from them.
I think if more people realised that by voting they can bring about change, we would perhaps have a different situation. |
