The South African economy has more than doubled since the demise of apartheid; the economy is stronger now than it ever was under the NP. You can't measure the economy based on the exchange rate. The NP used exchange controls and propped up the exchange rate; when the ANC relaxed exchange controls and let the Rand find its true place on the world market is when foreign investment came and the economy grew. Something similar is happening in the US now in that the dollar has seemingly "collapsed" but is in fact finding its place in the market. Years of budget and trade deficits are reaping harsh rewards for the American people as their beloved gasoline has nearly tripled in price in five years in part due to the weak dollar.
What on earth makes you think the government is giving away water, sewer and electricity in the townships? I have worked in a township installing water, sewer, rudimentary roads and seen Escom install electricity too. The services are not free, but rather pre-paid. When people are out of credit, their water or electricity shuts off. During construction there was a lot of stealing utilities, but it was curbed once construction was complete. Free sewer would more than pay for itself with the health benefits, but its cost is also factored into the cost of the water. |
