As a white South African what am I supposed to think?
Hi All.
For starters. I came back after living in Europe for 13 years. I also left SA '93 I guess with the same moral attitude towards blacks back then of many white South Africans namely of "do not understand them, do not trust them and do not care". I came back with different views and still stand by these views. Every one has the right to be happy, equal and express freedom of expression. Be successful and contribute to their country. But if anything it is dam hard to equate this rationale with SA today. When asked in Europe about SA and apartheid I had to find some way of throwing in a different perspective on SA. You know something to offset the worlds view on whites and apartheid. I came up with a very simple but effective way of getting people to understand the predicament of whites in SA today. You have +- 45 million people in SA. Lets say that from this 2% are criminals (rapists, thieves, murders etc) It goes without saying that the greater number of criminals will fall within the black population and that the perpetrators of violent crimes will be exclusively in the black population. So, as a white male, how am I supposed to view and treat the average black male in a fair and rational way without the psychological disadvantage of the little voice in my head warning against the fact that this dude could be out to get me. It sounds paranoid but then the daily dose of news on the radio, television and web do nothing to feel else wise. |

I do not believe, I could ever go back, I love Europe far to much now... And to look over my shoulder all day long would make me very paranoid if I decided to return

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I used to walk under a subway under a railway line on my walk back from UCT. I never went into the subway if there was anyone under there - be they black or white. One day I was in my own world and got half way down when I noticed three coloured guys in there. I didn't want to look like a racist, so instead of going back out and waiting until they'd passed through (what I used to do, receiving glares), I carried on. I got to the bottom and the three of them mugged me. Hurray.
They had been waiting at the bottom for an easy target. I suppose that the bottom line is that you can't change that little voice in your head, but you can change the way you act towards others. |

No. I do not regret returning.
South Africa as a unique simplicity and naivety about it that is refreshing. People are genuinely friendly. We spend allot of weekends driving about and you can bet on it that there will be allot of positive things happening. For example... Two weekends ago, we drove +- 1200km. Between De Rust and Uniondale there was this colored guy looking for a lift. He was 50km away from Uniondale. Between these two villages is nothing. Sweet blow all!! ;-) So we gave him a lift to Uniondale. When we dropped him off he came to the driver side and said " Thankyou for the lift and may God bless and protect you on your journey" I am not religious, but it struck a cord, a beautiful one at that. And that I truly appreciate. You can go up to literally anybody and ask them for help and they will help. You can pass an 18 wheeler and blow your hooter and he will reply. That’s what I mean by simplicity and a special kind of naivety. This land is full of such people, simple in many ways but caring in all ways. No I do not regret it. For me personally, I love this country. The wide open spaces and the quietness of the veld. 13 years in Europe was enough. Europeans have nothing on us. They have been places we have yet still to go and I hope that we will never reach those grounds. This simplicity and naivety. You can not beat. I speak for myself. I am not a city boy. I hate it. I hated London and Paris and little ole Luxembourg. Too many sophisticated folk with too much money and no joy for living besides malls, expensive cars, the newest nokia and the next hip joint to eat la cuisine. To be surrounded by flaky lads and air headed chicks... ;-) Again I speak for myself and that is my point of view. I have made my choice and I stand by it. But Europe has its efficiency and stable societies and crime is not the norm, violent crime outside "contained" areas. Its just very hard to come to terms with the brutality and senseless ness of the violent crime here. And the government is not doing enough to nurture the positives that are evident in this land. Its sad. |

Europe is where it is because after the world wars, the people returned to God for guidance on how to make FAIR laws, and find enduring peace ok. They found it by studying scripture, and many laws have their roots based on the Laws given to the prophet Moses. And God blessed Europe. Europeans became spiritually enlightened because of the work of early Christians, before that their lives were even more rotten and evil than Africa will EVER be; before, now or EVER will be. When white came to Africa, they should have passed on the GOOD news that they received EXACTLY as it was given to them by the early apostles from Israel. If you want to see in SA, you have to start seeing black Africans with eyes of LOVE and UNDERTANDING. Yes, even when they just butchered and raped you children. They are like that because YOU made them like that by feeding the HATE and AGONY. Change the diet, and you will harvest rich fruit of peace and prosperity. There is NO other way, believe me. Jesus said: “Kind words can break the hardest of hearts”. Bob Marley said "Until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently, discredited and abandoned, everywhere is war, that until there is no longer first class and second class citizens of any nation, until the color of a man’s skin Is of no more significance than the color of his eyes, me say war, That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, without regard to race, dis a war, that until that day the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship rule of international morality will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued, but never attained" YouTube - Bob Marley War 2 • ALSO READ MY ARTICLE ON LUCKY DUBE; Listen to his music and lyrics. |

Thank you for your words Kolibri. There is another saying that has just come to mind. "If one of us is not free, non of us are free" That in light of what you contribute above. I would have to disagree with you though on some other of your points. "Without spiritual enlightenment" I was not aware the Zulu or Xhosa tribes new what spiritual enlightenment was until the whitey came along. Is Christianity not a western believe with its roots founded in the Jewish belief? When the white **** from Europe landed here there where no churches or youth meetings.... Youth for Christ movements etc. ![]() The Zulus where not a peace loving tribe neither. Did they not whip ass, kill, rape and make slaves of their captives? Africans where not all that advanced when the Europeans got here. Just imagine if they where. South Africa would be black, there would be a strong economy with no white interference and more than likely there would have been good trade relations with the rest of the world. But no mate. When Europeans got here, the locals where still acting scenes that where centuries old in Europe. What excuse did true Africans have for not making themselves strong contenders, a proud people, a strong people and tough nation or nations when the European ships landed. Well what?? Africans surely had many beautiful cultures, mystical ways and a brave past but they were not prepared for change inherent on the planet they lived on. Why. Does it matter now. No. Yesterday is gone and all we have is tomorrow. So stop the *****ing and whinnying about the past and the wrongs done the black people. That’s life and the strong will influence the weak. Is happens every day. Look at the war on terror and what America is inflicting on Iraq. The question is what can we do about tomorrow, today as one people. Do we need to tolerate violent crime. No. regardless of ones past. What do you think this is. A psycho charity movement where all innocents stick their necks out to be willingly murdered? This is reality in a very different world as apposed to 600 years ago. And crap like religion is not going to change a mans soul. Wanting to help one another for the common good will do the trick just fine. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow will never come, and all we ever had is now....?! 1. Contact with Whites and 2. Not being taught the right gospel by the fist white missionaries. Spiritual enlightment was carried out based on half truths and incomplete/ false teachings leading to people becoming semi-civilised and confused about their identity, self worth and purpose on earth. Read my article again, I hate to repeat myself. Quote:
