Bloemfontein - The City of Roses

Bloemfontein is the capital city of the Free State Province, as well as being the judicial capital of South Africa. Often referred to as the 'City of Roses', Bloemfontein effortlessly blends old with new, holding onto its historic treasures while embracing all the conveniences of modern life. Strategically placed in the middle of the province, Bloemfontein is often the stop-over point for people traveling to and from other destinations in South Africa, but it is an appealing destination in its own right and certainly worth exploring.

The Oliewenhuis Art Gallery, a striking sandstone-clad building set in superbly landscaped gardens, showcases a wealth of artistic talent. Other attractions include the Bloemfontein Zoo, the Orchid House, Botanical Gardens, the Franklin Reserve situated on Naval Hill on the city’s outskirts, the Bloemfontein National Museum and the Women’s Memorial, as well as a number of small memorials and monuments to be found throughout the city, each commemorating an event or honoring an influential historic figure. Historic buildings of interest include the City Hall, the Anglican Cathedral, the Old Presidency and the Dutch Reformed Twin Tower Church.

Sport is an integral part of many South African’s lives and Bloemfontein was a host city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with matches to be held in the Free State Stadium sport complex. With so much to see and do, why not take some time out to explore the vibrant Free State city of Bloemfontein.

You should consider adding a page on the Anglo-Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein. The War during 1899-1902 was a significant event in our history.
