Kroonstad - Historical and Picturesque Town

A mere two hour drive from Johannesburg lies a picturesque Free State town named Kroonstad. The historical town was established in the year 1855. While there is some debate as to how it got its name, most locals lean towards the popular folklore that the town was named after a horse by the name of Kroon, which belonged to Sarel Cilliers, a Voortrekker. According to the legend, Kroon died in a tragic drowning accident in a stream that was located where the town now stands.

Kroonstad is a wonderful destination to visit, as its endless green agricultural lands bring a sense of peacefulness to the town, while the immaculately preserved historical buildings give it a nostalgic atmosphere. Local anglers flock to the Vals Rivier each year and holiday makers enjoy the tranquility of the camping and caravan parks which are located on the river. Other activities include Kroonpark, where visitors can enjoy cooling pools and water activities such as waterslides and boating or for nature enthusiasts, the Zoutspruit Game Camps offers magnificent game drives and hiking opportunities. Attractions include the massive meteorite impact site at Vredefort Dome and the Sarel Cilliers Museum, including his farm which has been restored as a memorial.

For a truly unique and relaxing experience, Kroonstad is the perfect destination. Complete with attractions, activities and a rich history, the town provides visitors with a dramatic insight into the history of South Africa and unforgettable memories.
