Krugersdorp - Many Attractions including the Sterkfontein Caves

Founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius and named in honor of prominent South African statesman, Paul Kruger, the city of Krugersdorp is situated in the West Rand of South Africa's Gauteng Province. Primarily a mining town, with large reserves of gold, iron, manganese, asbestos and lime, Krugersdorp forms part of the Mogale City Municipality.

While Krugersdorp has world-class shopping malls and sporting facilities, including an ice skating rink, it is the attractions on the outskirts of the town that draw visitors. The foremost of these attractions is the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, located nearby, which offers excellent game viewing opportunities. Birding enthusiasts will appreciate the more than 200 bird species in the reserve and game to look out for include various antelope species, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and hippo.

Located around twelve kilometers north of Krugersdorp are the awe-inspiring Sterkfontein Caves, forming part of the World Heritage Site known as the Cradle of Humankind. Dare-devil adventurers can bungee jump off Krugersdorp’s Kings Kloof Bridge and the site also offers a bridge swing and an adventure circuit. The South African National Bird of Prey Center offers fascinating insight into these magnificent birds and the Railway and Steam Train Museum invokes a sense of nostalgia for a time when the pace of life was a little more relaxed.
