St Lucia South Africa

The St Lucia Lake is a paradise for nature lovers and anglers. Large shoals of Salmon (Kob), Bream, Mullet and Grunter enters the estuary and is followed by sharks and game fish, offering some of the finest angling available. Herds of Hippo wallow in the shallow waters and numerous Crocodiles inhabit the pools and river mouths. On the shores there are a wide variety of antelope and the area is well known for its bird life. Accommodation is available and guided tours and trails can be arranged.

Due south of the St Lucia estuary is the Mapelane Nature Reserve, famous for the highest forested dunes in the world.

West of the St Lucia estuary is the magnificent Mfolozi Game Reserve, 47000 hectares of prime wilderness area famed for the conservation project that saved the almost extinct White Rhino. Today more than 1000 White and Black Rhino are maintained in the reserve and a variety of antelope species, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Cheetah also occur. Wilderness trails are available but in great demand and must be booked in advance.

North east of Mfolozi, joined by a conservation corridor is the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, one of the oldest game reserves in the country. An area of dense bush, forest, opens grass and savannah with a variety of animals and birds.

At the northern limit of the St Lucia Reserve is the Sodwana Bay National Park, situated in a series of forest covered dunes. This reserve is a paradise for anglers and divers fishing or exploring the off-shore reefs.
