Letaba District - Lush Valley and Rugged Mountains

The Letaba District of South Africa's Limpopo Province incorporates the lush valley of the Letaba River and the rugged Magoebaskloof mountains. The high rainfall experienced by Letaba District, along with the subtropical climate and fertile soil, create perfect conditions for the farming of subtropical fruit and other produce. Mangos, litchis, avocados, kiwis, bananas, cherries, citrus, papayas, pecan nuts, macadamia nuts and tomatoes are all grown in Letaba District, and this is also the only area in South Africa where tea is cultivated.

Tzaneen is both the capital and biggest town in the Letaba District. Surrounded by subtropical vegetation, this picturesque town makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Visitors taking a drive through the lush forests of the Magoebaskloof will come across the stunning Debengeni Falls and the historic town of Haenertsburg, which was established in 1887 during the gold-rush period. Other places of interest in Letaba District are the little village of Duiwelskloof and the Modjadji Cycad Forest. The Kruger National Park's Phalaborwa Gate, which is only an hour's drive from Tzaneen, is the entrance to the northern regions of this renowned game reserve - yet another reason to visit the Letaba District of South Africa.
