Letaba District
The Letaba is a forested, abundant, mountainous area east of Polokwane which contrasts very sharply with the hot lowveld directly east and the wide, flat bushveld to its west. It marks the first dramatic rise of the Drakensberg Escarpment as it begins its brush south through Mpumalanga, and in many ways is a beautiful but less well-known alternative to the latter province's crowded highlands.
The forestation begins around the mountain village of Haenertsburg and follows two picturesque parallel valleys to the largest centre in the area, Tzaneen. The valleys are filled with lakes encircled by dark pine forests, sparkling rivers, misty peaks and, towards Tzaneen, subtropical crops such as tea, macadamia nuts and avocados. There are some very comfortable and beautifully situated guesthouses, farm stalls and tea rooms, hiking trails and trout fishing, making the Letaba a soothing alternative to South Africa's more challenging environments.
