Phalaborwa
The most northerly access to the central section of Kruger is at Phalaborwa, 74 km north of Hoedspruit. The name means 'better than the south', a cheeky nickname coined as the town developed on the back of its extensive mineral wealth. During the sixties, the borders of the park near Phalaborwa suddenly developed a kink, and large copper deposits were found, phenomenally, just outside the protected national park area.
The only reason to visit Phalaborwa is on your way in or out of Kruger, as there's little to divert you unless you need a bed for the night. However, keen golfers shouldn't miss the chance of a round in the company of big game at the sign-posted Hans Merensky Country Club, where it's not unusual to see giraffes and elephants meandering across the fairways. You can wet your appetite before heading into the park with a short microlight flight over the park, or a sundowner boat trip with Jumbo River Safaris, which sets out at 3pm down the Oliphants River and regularly encounters game, including elephants.
