Polokwane

Situated at the heart of the Limpopo Province, Polokwane is the provincial capital of the region. It is also the largest city on the Great North Road between Pretoria and the border. Its proximity to massive game reserves as well as the neighboring countries of Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Swaziland, make it the perfect starting point for your travels. The city is incredibly beautiful and filled with a number of excellent attractions. It also has virtually any facility and amenity you can think of, so you can count on your stay here being a most enjoyable one.

Formerly known as Pietersburg, Polokwane was founded by Andries Potgieter in 1884. Right from the start it prospered, enjoying massive wealth due to the richness of the agricultural district that surrounds it, and then later from the gold found here. Today it is also a major administrative and industrial center. It is also a gateway to neighboring countries, since it is only through the Great North Road – which runs past this city – that people traveling by road can gain access to countries like Zimbabwe. However, the city of Polokwane itself should not be overlooked and a short stay here is definitely worth considering. Some of its attractions include the Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho Open-Air Museum, the Bush Craft Trading Store that sells handmade curious and crafts, the Cheune Crocodile Farm, the Concentration Camp Cemetery, the Eersteling Monuments, the Farmyard, the Gazebo in Civic Square, the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum, the Makapansgat Caves and Limestone Works, the Melted Guns Memorial and the Middestad Center where you can shop till you drop. Natural attractions include the Modjadji Rainforest, the Moletzie Bird Sanctuary, the Polokwane Bird and Reptile Park and the Polokwane Game Reserve. Also worth looking at are the Polokwane Museum, the Savannah Shopping Center and the Voortrekker Memorial and Wagon Tracks.

Polokwane’s proximity to massive game reserves, like the Kruger National Park, also make it a popular choice since visitors can easily escape the liveliness of the city by heading for the tranquility of the bush. The city also has wonderful accommodation, good weather and friendly people, so make Polokwane a part of your travel plans today.
