Witbank - Quaint Beauty and Uniqueness

The name Witbank means “White Ridge”, as it was named by wagon drivers that used the white sandstone outcrop as a resting place. It wasn’t long before coal was discovered and farmers came from far and wide to transport the coal. Of course, with the coal mining industry gaining momentum, so did the number of residents, and Witbank was officially established in the year 1890. This Mpumalanga town is still a hub for mining, with twenty two collieries located here, but everyone needs a little relaxation, and Witbank has many attractions and activities to enjoy.

In town, visitors will find quaint coffee shops scattered in all directions, with art and farm stalls located in various places. The Witbank Dam is not only the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, but is the venue for a variety of water sports including fishing, skiing, boating and windsurfing. More adventurous activities such as parasailing, 4x4 trails and skydiving are also available. With the Kruger National Park on the town's doorstep, wildlife enthusiasts will be able to view the Big 5 of Africa on a day trip to the reserve. Hiking trails take visitors on spectacular nature excursions, with bird watching opportunities around every corner.

Other noteworthy attractions include a few rounds of golf at the Graceland Gold Course, the Botshabelo Mission Station and the Ndebele Village. Discovering the beauty and uniqueness of Witbank and its surrounding areas is a truly enriching experience.
