Groot Marico - Rustic and Beautiful Town

Located in the North West Province of South Africa, the rustic town of Groot Marico (Big Marico) is set in beautiful African bushveld and is steeped in history. This is the land where early pioneers set down roots following their long and grueling journey from the coast. Here is where many an Anglo-Boer altercation took place. This is the rugged bushveld in which renowned South African writer, Herman Charles Bosman, set his famous, much-loved, and often humorous, short stories based on the lives and experiences of the people who call Groot Marico and the Marico district home.

While the town, which takes its name for the nearby Groot Marico River, is actually quite small, it is big on hospitality. Hiking, climbing, camping, birding, tree identification and stargazing in the crystal clear night sky are all favored activities among locals and visitors alike, as are canoeing and swimming in the Groot Marico River. Accommodation at a working farm gives visitors the opportunity to join in daily farm activities, which is a wonderful experience for city-dwellers, especially for children.

A visit to the bushveld of Groot Marico would not be complete without a game drive at one of the local game farms. Certainly, Groot Marico has what it takes to offer visitors an authentic South African cultural experience.
