Upington
Upington, was developed from a mission station founded in the 1870's, it was renamed after the Attorney General, Sir Thomas Upington in1895. This was also the hunting grounds of the infamous highwayman Scotty Smith who died in 1919 and whose grave can still be seen in the local cemetery.
Upington is a great tourist attraction in this region being en-route to the Kalahari Gemsbok Park as well as near the Augrabies Waterfall and National Park. This is one of the five biggest waterfalls in the world.
A visit to the Augrabies Falls is counted as one of the world's greatest spectacles. Named after the Nama word meaning 'The place of great noise', the water of the Orange River crashes down a 240 meter deep gorge.
The Augrabies Falls National Park is 8900 hectares of fascinating wilderness and has become a center of conversation for the re-introduction of the endangered Black Rhino.
Tours can be arranged to karakul farms and agricultural estates. Upington is in the center of one of the richest semi-precious stone deposits and is a collector's dream. Upington offers golf, tennis, bowls, boating, swimming, fishing and many other attractions.
