Agriport Durban

Agriport, situated on Maydon Wharf in Durban, is a multi-purpose terminal with equipment to handle varied cargo consisting of neo-bulk, break-bulk and containers. Agriport is a joint venture between the South African Port Operations (SAPO) and Viamax. As the first port in South Africa to have a grain elevator, which was built in 1927, Agriport had a 42,000 ton capacity, which was only exceeded in the 1960s when East London built a grain elevator. It was later decided, however, to convert the grain import/export facility to accommodate the export of wood chips, and a wood chipping plant was built alongside Agriport, which by July 2007 had exported one million tons of wood chips to Japan.

SAPO has undertaken large scale modifications and upgrades to all the ports and harbors that it controls, with the focus being on infrastructures, buildings, quay modifications and general service delivery. A total expenditure of R1.1 billion has been set aside by SAPO for the upgrading process, which will benefit the import/export trade at Agriport as well as other ports throughout South Africa.
