Clarence Drive - Mountain Passes of South Africa

One of a series of Mountain Pass driving videos showing GPS, safety, technical and historical data in text overlay This beautiful coastal drive stretches from Gordons Bay in the west and runs close to the coast till the tiny seaside village of Rooi Els, where it rises steeply to the coastal plateau at the 20 km mark, and re-joins the coast again at Betty's Bay. The road is in fine condition having had a major revamp a few years ago. This drive is a must for any visitor to the Cape Peninsula. Note that this drive has been filmed in the opposite direction (East to West) The road rises and falls from sea level to a maximum of 70m ASL repeatedly as it passes well known landmarks like Kogelbaai and various well known angling spots. There are many safe places to stop along the route which provide expansive views over False Bay. Please note that no fires may be lit anywhere along this road. On a clear day you will be able to see Cape Point on the opposite side of the bay. False Bay is packed with marine life including seals, dolphins, sharks and whales. Getting there: From Cape Town, take the N2 to Gordons Bay, then simply follow the only road heading south along the coastline. The road finally terminates at a T-Junction on the Hermanus Road. It is an option to turn left there and return to Cape Town via the Houw Hoek Pass, Coles Pass and Sir Lowrys Pass which will deliver you back at Somerset West and from there the N2 back to Cape Town.
