V Blog Gauteng - Experiencing Freedom (Park) [03:36]
Today was my first proper excursion within Gauteng, South Africa. I was taken by Jeffrey, a young Johanesburg photographer and designer, with Prins, a war veteran and now educator, to The Nelson Mandela Freedom Park. Its about an hour drive out of the city, and it takes about the same to wander through it. The decision to construct The Freedom Park is a huge moment in South Africa's history, because it marks the period after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had closed and the country made active decisions on how best to proceed post the TRC. It was a humbling experience, and made more so by Prins, who is part of the team who are conducting research for the Wall of Names, one of the most ambitious projects inside the park. Interestingly, Jeffrey had been there once before but not to visit it as a memorial site, but because the conference centre is rented out and was used when Miss World was hosted by Gauteng, South Africa. It is a multifaceted space!

Whale watching at its best - Hermanus, South Africa (hyrex, whale watching in western cape) [01:41]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow video of a travel blog to Hermanus, South Africa by TravelPod blogger Caralyn. See this TripWow and more at Whale watching at its best "We left Cape Town on our own adventure. We rented a car, a Tata Indica, and headed off to experience the beauty of the Garden Route. Chris did the driving (since he is much more adept at a manual transmission) and I navigated. It didn't take us long out of Cape Town to see the beautiful landscapes of South Africa. Our first stop was in Hermanus. Hermanus' claim to fame is that it has the best whale watching in the world. Well being a west coast Canadian who thinks we have some great places to whale watch, I was sceptical. I must admit, I now feel they were right. We were not in town for 10 minutes when we saw our first Southern Right Whale breeching. We decided to have a nice leisurely lunch at a local cafe and had a great view of the whales in the harbour. I just loved being able to sit at the window with my drink, enjoying the whales. After lunch we headed back down to the shores to walk for a bit and watch them some more. I still cannot get over how close to the shore they came. We then headed to our amazing bed and breakfast "Baleens". It is run by a very nice couple who were very social and had done a lot of travelling in Africa. They told us a lot of stories of different places they had been and some really interesting anecdotes about different African cultures and countries. It was ...
