Breede River Valley

Breede River Valley, with 10 uniquely exquisite entrances is incredibly beautiful and serene. Visit the Karoo National Botanical Garden that gives you the opportunity to get to know the rare plants of the drier regions of South Africa, some of which are on the verge of extinction. The Breede River Fruit Route offers cherries, apricots, peaches, apples, pears and grapes all available to be picked. There are 2 brandy cellars and 57 wine cellars throughout the valley.

Ceres

Named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, the pretty little town of Ceres lies in the mountain-fringed basin that is famous for its fruit orchards and yields magnificent harvests of apples, peaches, nectarines, cherries, oranges and potatoes. The local fruit-packing plant is the southern hemisphere's largest. The upland air here is crisp and clean, the scenery superb and the winter snow-clad mountains that attract skiers to their slopes, provide superb reasons to pay a visit. In a nut-shell, Ceres is an inviting destination for the get-away-from-it-all weekender who desires a selection of reasonably priced hotels and family resorts to choose from.

Tulbagh

This charming historic town, with a wealth of Cape Dutch architecture, is set against a beautiful mountain landscape. Damaged in the 1969 earthquake, the town has now been faithfully restored. Tulbagh has a well-established wine route and various outdoor activities. /

Worcester

The Breede River Valley's largest town is noted mainly for its large showgrounds and museum complex - the most intriguing of which is the Kleinplasie open-air-exposition. Located a short distance outside town, this permanent re-creation of the life and times of the Dutch farming pioneers is on display with replicas of cottages and huts, horse mills, coach houses, butcheries, blacksmiths, domestic kitchens and wine cellars. If you're feeling adventurous, then ask around to try some of the locals strongest brew: 'witblitz'. Otherwise known as 'white lightning', this alcoholic drink is taken as a shooter and is made from peaches. It doesn't have much of a taste and isn't made to be enjoyed. Its made to warm you on a cold winter's night or to enjoy with a mixer.

Kleinplasie is very much a "living museum" - your visit is enlivened by demonstations of wheat-milling, blacksmithing, candle-making, bread-making, tobacco-rolling and other sturdy frontier skills. The Kleinplasie farmstead incorporates a taproom and restaurant.
