Breede River Valley - Majestic Mountains

Taking its name from the Breede River that travels through the valley from its source in the mountains near Ceres heading to the Indian Ocean, the Breede River Valley is indescribably beautiful. Vineyards and fruit orchards stretch as far as the eye can see, changing colors with the changing seasons. The picturesque little towns that lie in the valley offer a welcome retreat to city dwellers, and being located within easy driving distance from Cape Town, the Breede River Valley is a popular holiday getaway for both local and international travelers.

The Breede River Valley is surrounded by majestic mountains and there are no less than ten scenic routes leading into the valley from different directions. The valley stretches from Tulbagh in the north to the town of McGregor in the south, from Ashton in the east through to Rawsonville in the west and incorporates the towns of Montagu, Ceres, Bonnievale, De Doorns, Robertson, Wolseley and Worcester – each with its own unique features and personality.

Visit the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden which is custodian to the rare plants of the drier regions of South Africa, some of which are being brought back from the brink of extinction. The Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area presents Mother Nature at her very best, and the Breede River Fruit Route offers visitors the opportunity of picking cherries, apricots, peaches, apples, pears and grapes, fresh from the tree when in season. Visitors are invited to enjoy the Route 62 wine route which visits some of the more than 50 wine producers located in the valley or stop off at one of the valley’s brandy cellars.

With activities on offer including a 4x4 route, tractor rides, mountain biking, hiking, canoe safaris, horse riding, fishing, rock climbing and a variety of water sports, there is certainly something for everyone in the exquisite Breede River Valley.
