Oudtshoorn - A Klein Karoo Treasure

Located in the ruggedly beautiful Klein (Little) Karoo region of South Africa, Oudtshoorn is readily associated with ostrich farming - and little wonder, as there are around 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town. The world-renowned Cango Caves are another reason that visitors flock to this lovely town, but there is certainly much more to Oudtshoorn than these two noteworthy attractions.

With an average of 320 days of sunshine per year, Oudtshoorn is an excellent destination for the outdoor enthusiast. The Swartberg, Outeniqua and Kamanassie mountain ranges surrounding the town offer opportunities for quad biking, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, abseiling, rock climbing, bird watching, game viewing and, if you’re brave enough, ostrich riding. Be sure to visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch, as well as arranging to observe the “Shy Five” with Meerkat Magic.

For visitors interested in history and culture, the C.P. Nel Museum housed in a historical sandstone building, presents the fascinating heritage of Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo. Discover the stories behind the two “Ostrich Booms” which resulted in prosperity gained, lost and gained once more.

Oudtshoorn is also the venue for the annual Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, better known as the KKNK. This popular event attracts artists, performers, musicians and KKNK devotees from far and wide to enjoy a week long celebration of South African culture at its best.
