Botrivier - Quaint but Much to Offer

Are you looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life? Perhaps you would like a little rest and relaxation in the country. Or maybe you're interested in some outdoor adventure activities. The quaint village of Botrivier is the ideal destination for you. Beautifully located along the foothills of Houw Hoek Mountain range and looking out over the golden wheat-fields of the Cape Overberg, Botrivier town is a delight for vacationers.

Botrivier has been inhabited since before the settlers arrived in the Cape. Khoi-khoi tribes used to wander through the area along the lovely Bot River. The location was ideal for pasturing their cattle. Interestingly, the Khoi-khoi or Hottentot name for the Bot River is Gouga, meaning “abundance of fat”. This is the same Khoi word that is used for butter, which the Hottentots used to produce. Merchants came from the Cape during 1672 carrying barrels of butter which they hoped to trade. The river was soon named the Botter (butter) which was later shortened to Bot Rivier.

Nearby is the Bot River Lagoon, a marshy area formed from the waters of the river which originate just to the south of Theewaterskloof Dam. In the wetland area that has formed here birders can view a variety of waterfowl and other birdlife. Also gathering here is the only wild horse herd in South Africa. Pleasant Botrivier is encircled by fertile valleys and mountains covered in fynbos. Attractions in the area include historical wine farms. Beautmont Wines is found on the old farm of Compagnes Drift. Originally owned by the Dutch East India Company back in the 18th century, today it is a family farm producing lovely top-quality wines. Accommodation is available on the farm. Located beside the Bot River Lagoon is Laughing Waters where visitors to the area will find the exclusive Arabella Sheraton Hotel as well as top restaurants, a brilliant wellness centre and a great championship golf course. In the little town of Botrivier is the Botrivier Hotel. This popular venue attracts many visitors eager to enjoy a drink or to check out all the fascinating memorabilia inside. Those who are up for a horse ride through Botrivier's surrounds can head to the Klein Paradys Equestrian Centre. Other activities on offer include 4x4 driving, hiking, mountain biking and kayaking.

Although Overberg's Botrivier is a small town, it is by no means insignificant, offering visitors a lovely vacation filled with fun activities and relaxation.
