Plettenberg Bay - Stunning Beaches and Holiday Dream Destinations

Located in the heart of South Africa’s verdant Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay with its stunning beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters and hospitable people, is a much sought after holiday destination. Generally referred to simply as “Plett”, and known as the Jewel of the Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay is teeming with birdlife and is a haven for one of South Africa’s largest breeding colonies of seagulls. Dolphins frolic in the surf and endangered Southern Right Whales calve in the bay between July and December.

There is little doubt that the main attraction at Plett are the pristine beaches where visitors can enjoy soaking up the sun, playing beach sports and boogie boarding in the waves. Beachcombers are likely to come across the delicate pansy sea shell which is endemic to this section of South Africa’s coastline. Other activities in the area include hiking, skydiving, kayaking, fishing, bird watching, playing golf, scuba diving, horse riding and mountain biking. The Robberg Peninsula nature reserve ensures that visitors can view many of the local animals and plants, such as the beautiful Cape fynbos, at their leisure.

There is strong evidence that the history of Plettenberg Bay goes way back to the Middle Stone Age with the area being occupied by the ancestors of the Khoisan. Certainly, long before Jan van Riebeeck landed in the Cape, 15th and 16th century Portuguese explorers had stopped off in Plettenberg Bay – and they named it “Bahia Formosa” meaning the Beautiful Bay. Why not discover that beauty for yourself - make Plettenberg Bay your next holiday destination.
