Durban’s North Beach – Surfer’s Paradise
Durban’s North Beach is probably the busiest and best beach along the Golden Mile. Situated between the Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach, it has stunning white sandy stretches with good breakwaters. During the holiday season it is North Beach which sees most of the action. Each year it hosts the Vodacom Beach Africa Festival and the Mr. Price Pro. North Beach has a wide variety of attractions and is the city’s ultimate beach destination for families.
The beach is cared for by the Durban Surf Lifesaving Club and the clubhouse is a prominent feature on the Marine Parade. There are a number of qualified lifeguards who work at the club and who watch the beach every day and the waters are protected by shark nets. North Beach is flanked by two large piers and can be accessed from the Marine Parade. Upon Arriving you will find that there are a variety of attractions that you can enjoy with your family. The walkway, which runs along the beach between the promenade and Marine parade and Snell beachfront roads, make for a great walk. There are also a number of contained, family orientated pools for those with young children or virtually no swimming ability. A variety of restaurants provide great food while a number of craft stalls sell all sorts of hand-crafted goods. Visitors often enjoy watching the women doing their beadwork as they sit on the pavement. Minitown is not too far away and is great fun for the whole family. The attraction basically features a scale model of Durban which can be explored at your leisure.
Apart from these attractions, Durban’s North Beach is popular with surfers, body boarders, paddle skiers and skateboarders. The sea itself is excellent for most types of water sport and the long, open stretch of beach is perfect for sunbathing. During the holiday season, a number of holidaymakers and tourists flock to North Beach to camp, braai and generally enjoy themselves at one of Durban’s best beaches.
