The Eden Challenge Adventure Race
The popular Eden Challenge adventure race is set to take place from 25 to 28 October 2007, in the beautiful Garden Route area of the Cape, South Africa. The 30 hour race covers a distance of 260 kilometers, split into 40 kilometer paddling, 150 kilometers by mountain bike and a 70 kilometer hike. There is also a shorter version covering a 180 kilometer distance – so there is definitely something for everyone.
Due to special arrangements that need to be made on the transport side, entries for the event are limited to 25 teams of four contestants. By late June, entries had been received from ten teams, many of whom have competed in, and enjoyed, the Eden Challenge previously.
A conservation competition sponsored by Nedbank and Brochure Management will be run in conjunction with the event. This is to assist Cape Nature in research on leopard species found in South Africa. The leading teams will carry GPS devices and their tracks will be followed. The competition will include questions on the Eden Challenge and the habitat of the Cape Leopard. Winners will enjoy a weekend at a prime destination in the Southern Cape.
The event starts off with a hiking section which leaves from George Airport, after registration and race-briefing at the Garden Route Mall. Although the diverse terrain is sure to test participants outdoor skills to the limited, that does not mean that fitness is the only criteria for winning. A love of nature will be most beneficial, as well as enjoying the challenge of the unknown and having a sense of humor. These can make the difference between the single-minded goal of winning and the goal of making the whole experience an enjoyable and memorable one.
Although adventure racing does carry some risks, there is a vast difference between calculated risk taking and negligence or recklessness. With this in mind it is a good idea for contestants to ensure that pre-race fitness and nutrition are given adequate attention.
There are a number of very good reasons to enter the 2007 Eden Challenge, including a stunning opening venue, diverse and spectacular terrain, the opportunity to compete against the top teams in South Africa, media coverage, sponsored prizes and the promise of the ultimate racing experience that this well managed event offers. Entries close on 30th September 2007, so don’t delay if you want to take part in this exciting event.
