  • Banned user or banned username?

    Hey,

Do we ban users or just usernames. Our pertinacious friend nubianman is back with yet another persona, aggrandising his most notorious persona but as yet stopping short of breaching the rules.

Are we going to allow this? Or does a ban for a user mean exactly that, and not a ban for a persona?

ches, I think it's wonderful how you made it a link!

I don't actually know if we ban the ip addy or the user. I'd think IP, but either way it's not going to help.

Either way, at least there is some posting going on, eh?

          ja jong.

Ek maak einde van die jaar klaar. Ek's eintlik so bietjie skrikkerig vir wat ek daarna gaan maak.

'n Mens kry meer as 'n Research Assistent.

Ai.

I guess it's users, not usernames.

By the way, it's just a thought - but if you want more discussion to take place on these boards, using English in parallel to Afrikaans is probably a good idea. When non-Afrikaans-speakers (and we are the majority, let's face it) see pages with just replies in Afrikaans, it's kind of easy to see why nobody posts here. As a non-Afrikaans speaker, I just feel totally excluded from discussion when yet another thread turns into Afrikaans-only discourse.

Are you sure this is what you want?

I don't mean to decry the use of your own language - and you shouldn't be discouraged from using it in a forum which is dedicated to your country. However, you should be aware of the effect it has on people who can't speak Afrikaans - and you are looking for more people to participate here, are you not?

Joovi, don't even go there. The majority of the conversation on here is in English even though the majority of the regular posters speak or understand Afrikaans. We are very accomodating.
We all grew up in multilingual environments, so I geuss we don't really feel excluded if people conduct conversations in languages we don't understand.

Of course we'd like more people on here, but this is after all SA.com, and we want to give people the feeling that they are free to post in whatever language they choose.

When we post in Afrikaans it's mostly personal conversations anyway. This particular one was Moony & Ches asking me how uni was going. I'm happy to share with them becuase we have a long standing relationship but it's not something I want random guests on the board to have access to. Surely you understand that?

Well, I could contribute more in Japanese, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of replies. Yes, Afrikaans is an official language of South Africa - and this is SouthAfrica.com - however, not every African speaks Afrikaans. Please understand this.

I do understand. Very well. But to be honest, I'm surprised you didn't private message each other. When you post in a forum, people usually expect that you're contributing towards the subject. At least, that's been my experience; your mileage may vary. There are many forums I visit on the net - some are quite liberal, like this one - some suspend your account if you repeatedly stray off-topic, and some even moderate usernames and IP addresses before they're even allowed to join.

Generally, I have always resorted to using e-mail and private messages for sending private messages. You can't rely on language alone - Google will cache your text, where you will have no control over its distribution - and some day there will be an Afrikaans->English translation tool available. Need I say more?

You seem to be pretty good at dishing out the rules, even though you have only been here a few weeks

Is pointing out expected behaviour "dishing out the rules"? Not in my book; I reserve the right to be surprised. I also reserve the right to point out when I am surprised.

If you want to take it as such, feel free to do so. But don't twist my words into what they aren't, please.

look, if you want to post in Japanese, go ahead. If there were a bunch of members on here who all spoke Japanese AS AFIRST LANGUAGE I would not say a thing about them posting in it even though I do not understand. Even if it's second lang and they just choose to speak in it it wouldn't bother me.

Of course we didn't PM, there are more than two people involved in this conversation, eh? It would be a hassle to send it to multiple people when we have this lovely board available.

If It bothers you just avoid the threads with Afrikaans in them. I'll say again, they are not all that many.

This is one issue that I totally disagree with you on, and I won't be changing my mind.

Sorry that it bothers you but you'll have to make peace with it becuase it's not about to change.
